Lawyer websites by Joseph Leonard

What are the best ways to acquire clients for my law firm?

Acquiring clients for a law firm requires a mix of authority-building, relationship development, and targeted marketing. The best strategy depends on your practice area, geography, and whether you’re a solo or multi-lawyer firm—but here are the most effective, proven channels.

The number one way is to be found on the Internet. As I have mentioned, 70% of potential clients, even those with a referral, will try to check you out on the Internet before contacting you. If they can’t find the answers that they are looking for, they will find someone else. Too many lawyers have n website or a poor website that talks about them instead of addressing the customers legal issue and how you can help them.

Build referral relationships with lawyers who practice in different areas. Or are overloaded with cases, or don’t serve your geographic area

Join local bar association and attend legal networking events and associations in your city, county, and state.

Satisfied clients are your best marketers. Ask for reviews. Stay in touch quarterly (email newsletter).  Provide referral incentives where ethically allowed

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is critical for most practice areas (especially personal injury, family law, and criminal defense). Be sure you have a Google Business Profile. Get reviews. Create pages like “Divorce lawyer in [City]”, “How much does bankruptcy cost in [State]?”. Consider Google Ads or Social Media Ads

Be the “educator” in your niche with articles, podcasts, videos explaining “What to do after a car accident”, “How child custody is determined”, “What happens during a bankruptcy”, “How insurance companies try to avoid just payments.”

Build relationships with CPAs (tax + business law), Therapists (family law), Chiropractors (personal injury), and Real estate agents (estate planning)

Sponsor local events. Host free legal workshops. Speak at business associations. Offer free webinars

Don’t be a “jack of all trades, master of none”.Have  niche. Don’t list all practice areas on one page. Have a separate page for each practice area plus location combination for best SEO and user experience. For example, “Miami Truck Accident Lawyer”, “South Florida Trademark Attorney”, “Fort Lauderdale High-Asset Divorce Lawyer.”

Build an email list and send Legal updates, Case studies, FAQs, Reminders (“Review your estate plan annually”).
